Catching Surf Action : 360 Photography

One of the best water sports we love is surfing. It is probably our next favourite next skiing. We may look like imaging/photography freaks; we are proud fans of sports too! So to have these two at the same time is absolutely heaven for us.

Rip Curlers once made a creative 360 degree video of professional surfers back in 2010. It has 360 degree shots of surfers in it Watch it here:

360 surf photography has always been special to us and since quite a number of our readers have requested tutorials or tips on this type of photography, here’s some tips to try 360 surf photography yourself.

Before anything, we suggest you to keep those high definition cameras away for now and buy some inexpensive water proof cameras that you can practice with at first. Now for high end cameras, determine the lag time before taking pictures. Remember the timing in surf photography is very essential. How you time your system depends on your eyes and instincts. You must know when and when not shoot. These are however not new for action photographers but we’ll say it anyway: you do not learn these things over night. You must have the time and patience to be able to capture excellent shots for your surf panorama. Also, you must also have astitching software for you to be able to stitch your panorama. We recommend Hugin’s and PTgui for easy stitching.

One of our favourite places to get some surf pictures is from 360Photography. They spoiled us with over 60,000 surfing images that we can even make gifs out from. In addition though, they also offer kite surfing pictures and skiing pictures as well.
