After the historical tragedy (9.0 earthquake and tsunami) that hit Japan last March, Google started a project to capture as many images of the damage and track reconstruction efforts of Japan. This wasn’t an easy task for Google because since then, Japan has been very strict about their privacy issues with Google’s StreetView projects in their country. Later, Google was able pair with other humanitarian aids for Japan to help track missing people from the tragedy. One of their way is Google’s StreetView Project. Today Google officially allows users to take a virtual tour through the damage and loss caused by Japan’s March 11 earthquake and tsunami. After travelling more than 27,340 miles, Google StreetView Cars were able to record everything in 82 affected areas across 6 regions of northern Japan including Sendai, Kesennuma, Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima. According to Ken Tokusei in his blog, Product Management Director, Geo Asia-Pacific, on behalf of Google Japan and international Crisis Response teams, "Many photographers felt the disaster couldn’t be captured in just one photo or with a single camera, but immersive, 360-degree panoramic images can help people—especially those abroad—better understand the scope of the destruction.”
With Google’s 360 Degree Interactive view of Post-Tsunami Japan was very heartbreaking especially to those who had their great loss. These images are linked to a map that can be puzzled together to create a better immersive experience. One can definitely see debris, vanished buildings, and overturned boats all caused by the angst of nature. Tokusei added in his blog the advantages of Google’s Streetview to the world, “Professionals such as historians, architects, city planners and tourism boards—as well as regular users including travelers and home-buyers—can now get a sense of how fresh the online photos are for a locations that interests them.”
